Sleepwalking, also known as somnambulism, is more common among children than adults. It is estimated that 15% of children between the ages of 4 to 12 will have episodes of sleepwalking. The cause may be because they spend greater time in deep non-REM sleep stages. However, there are other causes, such as genetics, and an irregular sleep schedule, affecting the circadian rhythm, which regulates the sleep-wake cycle. Sleep deprivation, excessive stress, and magnesium deficiency can be other causes.
