Biphasic Sleep Can Optimize Sleep Time And Treat Insomnia

Biphasic Sleep Can Optimize Sleep Time And Treat Insomnia

It Consists In Dividing Sleep Into Two Phases

According to researchers, people had a different sleeping pattern before the industrial revolution. The 8-hour sleep was a result of the invention of the electric light, which allowed to have a continuous sleep phase. But before the invention of artificial lighting, people slept in two phases, separated by one hour, which is called biphasic sleep. The core sleep lasted 3 to 4.5 hours, while the secondary sleep lasted 90 minutes. In the best case, the sum of both phases is a little more than half of the 8 hours of recommended sleep. This has been documented in various cultures. Researchers state that this change of sleep pattern is the cause of insomnia, anxiety, and other health conditions associated with modern life. Applying biphasic sleep would interfere with work in the office, but there are ways to adapt it to everyday life. Additional details click here.
